Senior Pennant report 15 May 2023

Yellow Senior Pennant Team

Result Pinjarra 1/2 Gosnells 4 1/2

First off the tee was Alan McFarlane & Bob Cush who had a very good win over their opponents winning 3/2 and getting the team off to a great start away from home. Star of the day was Bob who played extremely well and holed some good putts and won the crucial 17th hole with a par to secure the points for the team. Alan played steady all day and helped out when needed. Great effort guys.

In a change to his normal spot at the back of the field our Captain Tony Peroni & sidekick  John O’Conner tee off second and had a very tight tussle with the boys from Pinjarra, and with Tony still having some putters tantrums were able to fight out a very good win 3/2 win. John was solid all day and helped out with some crucial putts when needed and with Tony getting back to some form in the later parts of the match, won a tight contest. Excellent effort guys .

In their normal spot of 3rd off, Rob Pearce & Fez Ferris had a very good match against the guys from Pinjarra, with handicaps being nearly equal, Rob & Fez got off to a good start and where never headed in the match. After 10 holes we went 4 up and were cruising, then the wheels started to fall off .The match started to get a bit tight as the Pinjarra boys started to win a few holes and with 2 to go we were only 1 up. 17th short drivable par 4 Fez hit a nice shot on the fairway and wedge on the
fringe of green for a 2 putt win and we kept our unbeaten streak. Bring on Rocky next week.

Next off was Michael Smart & Stuart Allen who had a titanic battle with the boys from Pinjarra, after 9 holes the boys were in a deep hole and were 4 down and staring down the barrel of defeat, but like Stuart’s  football Team in the AFL (Collingwood) refused to lay down and the fight back began. Still 4 down with 6 to play Stuart got hot with the putter and won the next 3 holes and were right back in the match, losing the 16th must have been devastating but no, with 2 holes left, up stepped
Mickie with his unusual putting technique and holed 2 monsters blows to the Pinjarra boys over the last 2 holes to win  both of them and etch out a great halve. Super effort guys well done.

Bringing up the rear today was our 2 senior members of the team Paul Whelan & Barry Urbano who have been struggling lately to get over the line, but today the boys had a very nice win of the guys from Pinjarra winning 3/2.  With Paul having some 10 strokes to play with over the course he used them very well and with Barry helping out on some other holes, they were able
to win. Great effort guys.

Next week is a do or die at Rockingham. Win or draw is what we need to make to the final.

Blue Senior Pennant Team

Gosnells ventured down the freeway to Rockingham on Monday 15 May to play Rockingham Blue.

Again, the weather was in our favour although there was a complete stuff up with the tee off times of the two Senior pennant divisions playing at Rockingham. That is a matter for another day suffice to say an email has been sent to Golf WA & the Rockingham Golf Club.

After 4 rounds all home clubs had won their home games & it appeared that if the same scenario continued then the winner of Blue division would come down to games won / lost. The pressure was now on the home clubs to win. This was in our favour as we had already played all our home games.

Gosnells Blue responded in excellent style with a 3/2 away win. What a win this was with 3 matches going down to the 18th & 2 finishing early.

Our lead off was Ken How & David Voysey. David had an opportunity to win the match on the 17th but missed a 2m putt. This left them 1 up going down the 18th but they were unable to close out the match & lost the last for a half. Both Ken & David played well in patches. Well done guys on the half.

Chris Hofman & David Stephenson teed off second, and it appears that whatever position Hoffy’s team plays, they come up against an in form golfer from the opposition. The 8 handicapper was only 3 over par after 14 holes when they went down 5/4. There is always next week Hoffy.

Myself & Graham Bell were third off, and we started well but could not convert, then Belly went on a run and either halved or won holes 4 – 8 until yours truly awoke from his slumber to contribute for the next 6 holes for a 4/3 win.

Terry Smith & Rod Chapman were next off and engaged in a see sawing match that never saw more than 2 holes separating either team. Teeing off the 18th , Gosnells were one up & finishing in semi darkness, they were able to halve the hole for a 1 up victory.

Ken Gray & Roy Wingrove were two down, playing the 17th. Roy was able to win the hole with a chip that hit the pin & dropped next to the hole. Teeing off the 18th in semi darkness they need to win this hole for a half. I was in a cart & after all teed off, I ventured down the fairway to locate all balls. The same procedure occurred for the second shots. When they went to play their third shots no one could see the flag therefore I positioned myself next to the flag, so they had something to aim at. Luckily, no ball came close, but Ken did leave his around 4m short of the hole. Ken needed to sink his putt for the half & he duly stepped up & converted. Perhaps Ken should putt with his eyes closed in future? This was a half for the ages.

The win at Rockingham means that we are through to the final with one match to play. Well done guys on a magnificent effort.
