April Greens Newsletter

What a great month of golf for GGC.

The club was humming as firstly we held the GGC Junior open on the 5th of April, followed by the Australian Junior Championship from the 9 – 12 April which was in itself followed by the Gosnells Senior Open and Gosnells Open. All entrants were very complimentary about the quality of the course. The greens were very slick & rolled beautifully, the fairways were cut low & tight. The bunkers were the best I have ever seen them. This is something all members should be extremely proud of.

Blue tee – Refer photo below of a blue tee handed to me back in late March. This tee has been hollowed out and a pop rivet inserted with plastic, heat coated around the prong. The culprit has taken quite some time to prepare this tee for usage. Significant damage could be impacted on a fellow worker or golfer if the mower blades spit the tee out and it hits someone. Please avoid using similar tees on our course.

6th path – A bullnose addition has been added to the 5th/6th granite dust path

Volunteers & E/B’s – These two groups together with Captain Glen Tueno and Junior Coordinator Darren Roberts have repaired many divots on all holes after the Australian Junior & Gosnells Open. Many thanks to all participants.

I also would like to thank Fiza and her band of ninja warriors who repaired pitch marks on all greens prior to the AJC.

Half a dozen bare areas on the mounds on the LHS of the 18th fairway have had Kikuyu runners planted and yellow sand utilised to level these areas. They are currently marked GUR.

The volunteers will commence clearing the dead & fallen branches as well as removing the wattles in the golden triangle bounded by the 15th, 16th & 17th holes sometime during May.

Own a hole – With the Australian Junior Open and Gosnells Open now over and after the Volunteers and EB’s have chopped in and sanded most fairway divots it is most important that all members renew their vows to Owning their own hole. Please take the time and effort to chop in two divots and repair pitch marks on your hole.

Branches – Branches continue to fall with an extremely windy Sunday evening / night prior to the AJC which resulted in a number of large branches falling. A large paper bark next to the RHS 3rd fairway bunker fell on Friday the 12th April with a further large branch falling on Wednesday morning the 17th April across the path which leads to the third tee box. Refer photo below.

Bare areas – We shall commence repairing all bare areas on the 1st & 3rd holes in May.

Blue lines – Blue lines will be painted around all greens effective from Friday the 3rd May. This means that all Motorised carts, electric and push buggy’s must stay outside the blue lines to preserve the integrity of the green surrounds during our wettest months.

General maintenance – The following was completed by Grounds during April:

  • Spraying the 12th for winter grass.
  • Spraying areas of couch in the greens.
  • Greens and tee boxes will be sprayed for crabgrass during May. We could not spray any earlier as the pump on our Boom sprayer had broken and has just been repaired.
