Men Senior Pennant White Division Report

Result Rockingham 3.5 Gosnells 1.5

We headed south to take on the sand belt course of the west, as if you missed the fairway you either find the black boys or the sand pit, so you need to be on the fairway.

The result did not go our way this week and our chances of making the final in 3 weeks is like West Coast beating the Red Hot Pies next Sunday, nearly Mission Impossible.

1st off the tee this week were Graham Morris & Barry Urbano and things started badly with Graham hitting his 1st drive into the rough only 20m off the tee, so it was not the ideal start for him. Things did not get much better for both of them over the next few hours as the boys from Rockingham used their local knowedge of the course to their advantage, and got to a good lead and the boys were unable to get anything going and went down 5/4 in the first match.

2nd off was the new pairing of Michael Smart & Bob Cush and this match went the distance all the way to the 18th hole, and Michael made a nice birdie to win the hole and square the match. Both teams had their chances over the remaining holes to win the match but could not sink a putt. Michael & Bob played some good golf over 18 holes and in the end getting a half point was a good result, well done gents.

3rd off was Rob Pearce & Ken Ferris and after losing the last week on the last hole, they were looking to bounce back with a win, but that was not the case as we lost to our opponents 4/3. After losing the 1st hole  we never were able to get our noses in front at all and were 3 down after 6 holes, and things were looking pretty bad, but a win on the short par 3 15 hole gave us some hope, and over the next 2 holes we managed to be 1 down going to the 9th hole but a bad drive by both of us gave the hole to them and they turned 2 up and from there it was a hard ask. We had strokes to play with and could not get anything going (we either win a hole and lose the next) and we finally ran out of holes and the Rockingham boys played well together.

4th off was Stuart Allan & John O’Connor who had a great match with Rockingham but lost 2/1 giving away some 10 strokes to their opponents and the match was a very tight affair and there were never more than 2 holes apart for all the match. After the front 9, the match was tight with our boys being 1 down and trying to get the win to tie it all square, but were unable to get that vital win, the match was being halved with good putts going in. In the closing holes, the Rockingham gents handled the pressure best and won.

5th off was Captain Tony & the Terminator John Connor and finally some good news to report with a win by the boys winning 3/1, an excellent effort by them. Giving away some 9 strokes to the Rockingham meant some good golf was played by Tony & John and they got their noses in front early and played very steady over the final few holes to get a badly needed point for the team. Great effort guys.

After 2 away games, we play our final 2 games at home and we need to win these matches to have any chances of making the final.

P.S.  The GGC white team did win yesterday (Monday 7 May) against Rockingham GC.
