June Member Spotlight – Jo Calvo

Jo Calvo is a full member of Gosnells Golf Club, having joined the club in December 2015. Jo has been an avid golfer since her early thirties and has been a regular, friendly face around the club since her arrival. She now plays off a handicap of 15.7.

Originally from Guam, Jo was living in the US until 2014 when she and her partner made the move to Perth. Upon moving, Jo said she played at many public courses around Perth, even being a part of a “ladies club at Whaleback.” Jo explained that she began playing a few private courses during Silver Bronze events, and when visiting Gosnells she said, “I felt so welcomed to the club.” Jo then decided she would become a GGC member as the club also suited her financial and travel needs.

Jo expressed that, “pennants was a major reason I became a private member,” and has been a member of many GGC teams in her 8 years at the club. Having the opportunity to play other private courses all over Perth in a competitive, yet fun team environment is something that Jo, along with many of our other members value highly about our membership. Aside from pennants, Jo has been heavily involved in the club in other roles such as Ladies Committee President. She said, “being a part of the committee was great as it was very interesting to better understand how a golf club runs.”

When asked about a favourite hole here at GGC, Jo couldn’t split them, saying, “all the holes offer different approaches on how to play them and all have unique challenges. However, Jo did mention that she has achieved the special golfing feat of a hole in one on our 9th hole, a very impressive accomplishment.

Jo aims to get down to the course three times a week, mainly playing in our member competitions. She stated, “I love the flexibility of being able to play competitions or a quick, social 9 holes if I want.” When playing in competitions, Jo tries to play with as many different members as possible to get to know them. She said, “it’s great to see how different people play and getting the chance to have a chat to all of our friendly members.”

After a round, Jo is often spotted in the alfresco area enjoying a post round drink and bite to eat with other members. Jo said, “I enjoy socialising after a round as the food is always good and the menu is often changing, so I can try new things.” Jo was also very positive about our GGC staff who she described as, “extremely friendly, caring and upbeat.” Overall, Jo expressed a strong passion for GGC, identifying that one of her favourite things about GGC is that “the club is always improving and striving to get better.”

We thank Jo for being a valued member of our club for almost ten years. Be sure to give Jo a wave next time you see her around the club.
