Pennant update – Sunday 21 May and Monday 22 May

Women’s Division 1 Pennant (Sunday 21 May)

The very first year GGC women’s Division 1 Pennant team were assembled in Club history just had their first team win against a very experienced LKCC team.

This win was extra special for the club as it was made up of majority of future girl champions of the Gosnells Golf Club.

Sundays team win consisted of Girls age between 11 and 16 years of age lead by our club Vice Captain Grace Cheetham. We also had Sasha Hoffman and State representative Jorja Hinson Tolchard out ( both unavailable) which shows the depth of women’s golf at GGC.

Senior Men Pennant Blue Team

Gosnells Blue travelled to Royal Perth to play their final round robin game of the year, knowing that we were already in the finals despite the result.

We were keen to finish on a winning note but alas, we only achieved a half.

We threw the positions everyone was used to playing around & gave Kenny Gray & Roy Wingrove the opportunity to finish in daylight after their game at Rockingham finished in the dark.

Ken & Roy teed off first & despite a spirited effort & winning 5 holes they were beaten 2 down.

Alan Andersson & Chris Hofman were second off and they yinged & yanged beautifully to record a 2-up win. Chris played well on the front nine with Alan lifting his game to his normal high standards on the back nine.

Ever reliable Terry Smith & Rod Chapman were third off & had an early finish, walking off the 14th green with a resounding 5/4 win.

The unbeaten pairing of myself & Graham Bell teed off 4th & were soon in trouble being 2 down after 3 holes. After the first nine we were all square, but the game continued to seesaw on the back nine with first Gosnells up by one & then down by one. Teeing off the 17th we were all square. Belly played the best two shots of the day & we went to the 18th one up only to fall on our sword & losing the last to finish square.

Ken How & David Voysey were last off and had an engaging battle with their opponents however they could not outlast their rivals & lost 2 down.

We play Cottesloe next Monday the 29th May. At the present time it is unknown at what location or time.

Gosnells Blue would also like to wish Gosnells Yellow all the very best in their endeavours to bring home not one but two flags this year.

Senior Men Pennant Yellow Team

Result Rockingham 1 Gosnells 4.

In a do or die match at Rockingham Golf Club on Monday the team played great golf to secure a place in the final on the 29th May.

First off as usual was Alan Mcfarlane & Bob Cush and the guys had an excellent win 2-1 over their opponents from Rocky. Alan & Bob got off to a fast start and were 3 up and playing very well and the ball was finding the bottom of the cup very nicely. The back nine got a little tight but on the 17th Bob was able to get a close with his 3rd shot and hole his next for an excellent win, and put the first points on the board for Gosnells.

Second off was our Captain Tony Peroni & John O’Connor and it was a tough match for the boys going down 4-2 to Rocky. Tony was still having problems with his putter once again and John was steady all day but found the Rockingham guys too good on the day and came away with a loss. Get on the putting range Tony we need you to sort out your Putter tantrums for next week final.

Third off was Rob Pearce & Ken Ferris and had another good win 3-2 to keep the team just in front of Rocky. Winning the first hole was a good start, and we increase our lead to 2 after 4 holes, and played steady golf over the next few holes, but lost the 8th & 9th holes to have the match all square at the turn. With 9 holes to play, we needed to up the ante and we were able to win the 10th hole with a good par, and 11th hole with a birdie to give us a 2 up lead. Over the next few holes it was either a
lost or win, but Fez came to the party on the 15th with a monster drive and a wedge to the green for a 2 putt par for the win. On the 16th hole Fez hit a snap hook drive into the bush and was in deep trouble and had to pick up, so it was up to me to win the hole which I played the hole well and was able to make par and end the match there and a 3-2 win. Our unbeaten record continues for the year.

4th off was Michael Smart & Stuart Allen who had another hard fought battle with the team from Rocky and winning 1 up. Giving the opposition plenty of strokes, Michael played outstanding golf early in the match and was square off the stick after 8 holes and the match was the same after some extra long putts holed by the Rocky players. With 4 holes to go the match was getting really tight and on the 16th hole after a bad drive from Michael, Stuart stepped up and made a great par from the fringe off the green to go I up. On the 17th the long par 3, Michael was long left and Stuart just short of the green, giving strokes
to the team from Rocky, Stuart hit a great putt to 3 foot and managed to hole it. On the 18th still 1 up the boys both hit super drives, and left them some 140mts from the hole, Michael went right pin high, and Stuart hit a bullet straight at the pin to land 4foot from the hole to secure a great win, and a place in the final. Great effort guys.

Last off the tee was Paul Whelan & Barry Urbano, who started like a bull out of the gate and were 3 up after 9 holes and in a cruising mode.  But the wheels started to fall off in the back 9 with the guys from Rocky winning 3 holes and the match is all square. With holes running out, Barry & Paul managed to win a couple of holes and went on to win 2-1. Great effort guys.

Overall a great team effort by all to make the final next Tuesdays at Seaview.
