Senior Men Pennant Green division 2024 season

It has been remiss of myself for not advising members of the exploits of Green division during our Senior pennant season which concludes next Monday the 13th May 2024.

A brief summary follows:

Game 1 v Secret Harbour 8th April 2024 @ Secret Harbour

We ventured down the freeway to sunny Secret Harbour for our first game of the 2024 season.

The majority of us had carts due to the distance between tees & greens. One partnership decided to walk, and they were the only group to win.

Well, done to Chris “Hoffy” Hoffman and newcomer Billy Dartnell who had a resounding win 7/5.

Kenny How and Rod “Chappy” Chapman came from behind to eke out a half.

We were a little unlucky in that we lost two games one down.

We felt that the loss of 3&1/2 to 1&1/2 could have been reversed.

Game 2 v Secret Harbour 15th April 2024 @ Gosnells

We had a return match against Secret Harbour, and it was decided the previous Monday that we would leave the teams unchanged so that the losers had the opportunity to seek revenge against the same players the previous week. The only change was for the reserve / s to play in lieu of one or two players.

Well, what a difference a week makes especially playing on your home course.

All teams had a win except for Dave Voysey and Dave Stephenson who settled for a half.

Revenge was sweet and a win of 4&1/2 to ½ was outstanding.

Hoffy and Billy Dartnell continued their outstanding form with another easy victory.

Game 3 v Royal Perth 22nd April 2024 @ Royal Perth

We were full of confidence and ready to take on the might of Royal Perth on their home course after our resounding win the week before.

Wins away from home are precious and place the team that wins away in a strong position to reach the final. Unfortunately, we were not good enough on the day and lost 3 & ½ to 1 & ½.

Royal Perth had a couple of 6 handicappers as well as 4 members in the mid-twenties. They combined well for their win.

Kenny Gray and Roy Wingrove were looking like winners with three holes to play but their opponents rallied and pushed them to the wire for a half. Ken had to sink a 7m putt on the last for the half.

Myself & Graham “Belly“ Bell were the only successful group for the day.

Our rocks of Gibraltar in Hoffy and Billy Dartnell unfortunately had their first loss of the season.

Game 4 v Rockingham 29th April 2024 @ Rockingham

This was our last away game of the season and again we were primed to win. We started quite well but unfortunately faded in the latter stages.

Hoffy and Billy Dartnell looked set for a win on the last hole, but a three-putt ended the match all square.

David Stephenson and Steve Heathcote came from 2 down to win the last hole for a half.

Myself & Belly held on for a 2/1 win.

The match ended with a loss to Gosnells 3 / 2.

This was our third away match in 4 games and we were never thrashed by the home team but could not get over the line.

The Rockingham captain and myself again decided to leave teams unchanged for our next match at Gosnells the following Monday.

Game 5 v Rockingham 6th May 2024 at Gosnells

Another great day for golf welcomed us on the 10th tee as we sought to win back some pride after our loss the previous Monday.

A number of the Rockingham players had not played at Gosnells previously therefore my view was if I win the toss, I would put them into bat as they did not know which way the fairway went as they hit over the hill. Did it work? Probably not as most of their players could not reach the top of the hill.

We had a great win overall of 4 /1.

The pairing of Heathcote and Stephenson was working sensationally well as they won with a magnificent effort of 8/7.

Hoffman & Dartnell as well as Gale and Bell both won 3/2. This left the last team of Voysey and How to bring home the bacon for a 4/1 win. Well, they had to do it the hard way and came from one down with three to play to win 1 up.

Our last game is against the top dogs in Royal Perth who have won through to the final due to their away win at Secret Harbour. We are looking at stopping their momentum by winning at home and finishing second.

The primary difference between Royal Perth and ourselves is that they have won the close games whilst we were just pipped in them.
