Captain Update

Club Championships

Men's and Women's Club Championships will follow the same format as last year, that is 36 holes stroke over 2 rounds followed by Matchplay.

A Club Championship newsletter will be available in July to explain all the necessary information.

Seniors and juniors will be played over two consecutive Sundays.

Key dates are:

  • Men's and qomen's qualifying rounds 3rd and 4th August
  • Matchplay will be held on Saturday 10 August and Saturday 17 August.

The Seniors and Junior Club Championships will be held on Sunday 11 August and Sunday 18 August (no matchplay).

This year, members are to enter their group directly into the timesheet - at which time payment must be made.

Carts will be permitted - subject to weather conditions.

Sponsored shotgun starts Thursday and Saturday

Members playing on a Thursday and /or Saturday would be aware that since March we have been conducting a once-a-month trial of a sponsored shotgun start on a Thursday and Saturday.  The term of these sponsored shotgun starts is that the sponsor needs to cover both a separate AM and PM competition.

We are now coming to the end of the trial period and will soon be seeking member feedback.

Some observations that I have noted include an increasing number of members wanting to sponsor a competition combined with a positive response to members staying for presentations.  A very big thank you to all those that have sponsored one of these events along with everyone else that has sponsored an event.

While we seek your feedback, the sponsored shotguns will continue (provided we have sponsors) and once we have reviewed the feedback, the Match Committee will discuss and a decision communicated to members in due course.

Pennants

Our Women's (Weekday and Weekend) teams are now well into their respective seasons.

Our Men's Division 2, 4, 5 and 6 commenced their season on Saturday 9 June, with 3 out of 4 teams starting with a win.  Good luck to all and thank you to everyone who has taken on a Team Captain role.

High Performance Junior Team in Kuala Lumpur

A significant milestone has been achieved in our junior program with 8 members of our Junior High Performance Squad this week travelling to Kuala Lumpur to participate in a World Golf Ranking Event.  To everyone who has helped with fundraising, either through our Containers for Change Program, our Junior Gala Day or through personal donations, on behalf of the kids I thank you.

I do not doubt that members from other clubs and the wider golfing community will take notice of this - another example of Gosnells being Your Club of Choice!

A big thank you to Darren Roberts (Junior Coordinator) and Moka Edwards and the Junior Committee for bringing this trip to a reality.

Rules

Several members have asked when we are implementing  "lift, clean and place" on the fairways.  This is being actively monitored but currently, conditions do not warrant the rule being implemented.  But if/ when conditions change the rule will be implemented.

Ever wondered what statements constitute giving advice and therefore are not allowed under the rules of golf?

Examples of statements not allowed;

  • A player makes a statement regarding club selection that was intended to be overheard by another player who has a similar stroke
  • A player's ball is lying badly.....another player states "...if I were you, I would....."

Examples of statements or actions that are allowable;

  • After two players played their shot onto the green, one of the players asks what club the other used
  • A player looks into another player's bag to determine which club they used for the last stroke without touching or moving anything

Penalty:  If a player asks for or gives advice when either player is playing the hole, the player gets the general penalty on the hole being played.  If a player asks for or gives advice when both players are between play of two holes, they get the general penalty on the next hole.

The general penalty is two strokes in stroke / individual play.

Jo Calvo

Jo Calvo - Member Spotlight

Jo Calvo is a full member of Gosnells Golf Club, having joined the club in December 2015. Jo has been an avid golfer since her early thirties and has been a regular, friendly face around the club since her arrival. She now plays off a handicap of 15.7.

Originally from Guam, Jo was living in the US until 2014 when she and her partner made the move to Perth. Upon moving, Jo said she played at many public courses around Perth, even being a part of a "ladies club at Whaleback." Jo explained that she began playing a few private courses during Silver Bronze events, and when visiting Gosnells she said, "I felt so welcomed to the club." Jo then decided she would become a GGC member as the club also suited her financial and travel needs.

Quick updates

A member has lost his Ping I2 wedge - if you found this on the golf course, please return it to the office as soon as possible.

There was a change to our golf fixture on Saturday 8 June and Sunday 9 June, changing from Stableford to Par and this is mainly because Merv Blee's honour board event on Saturday is traditionally played as a Par event. This weekend's previously Par formats will now be Stableford (Swapped around).

For those on direct debit payments for your membership, your monthly instalment fee has not changed. It remains at $14 per instalment. And for those on bi-monthly instalments, the fee has not changed. It remains at $50 per instalment.

Junior squad

GGC Junior Squad in Malaysia

Gosnells Golf Club is represented by 8 selected juniors (4 boys and 4 girls) from our high performance squad to represent the club at the 3rd Selangor International Junior Golf Championship, held at Sri Selangor Golf Club from 13 June to 15 June.

The trip is an amazing first milestone for the club's junior program and a great opportunity for the players with some, playing in their first-ever international event. This trip is possible due to the ongoing juniors fund raised by various junior fundraising activities which club sponsors, member sponsors, an annual junior fundraising day (to be held again this year on Friday 24 October 2024) and the weekly recycling from Containers for Change program, thanks to our volunteer parents in the junior committee.

This trip is made possible due to connections established by the Edwards family, in particular Moka Edwards who is also the golf operations manager at the club. Thank you Moka for this great opportunity for our youngsters.

The Club will be represented by (in alphabetical order):

Boys

  • Connor Roberts
  • Connor Pearson
  • Josiah Edwards
  • Mason Burr
Girls
  • Halia Edwards
  • Isabel Wee
  • Nariko McDonnell
  • Saehi Suh

Local rules - Path drop clarification

Free drop from all paths made of unnatural surfaces - ie blue metal, bitumen - these are not marked.

No free drop on paths made of natural surfaces unless they are marked.  The path from 14th tee to the maintenance facility is marked.  The part of the path between 5 and 6 marked is a free drop (limestone on both ends of this path was introduced a long time ago).

Part of the path from the maintenance facility (6th hole side) part of the way to the 6th fairway is marked -(same reason as above)

Other than that - there is no free drop for all other natural surfaced paths (ie sand).

Are you using Iinet, Westnet or TPG email?

We've been receiving comments from members who have not been able to send us any emails (to GGC accounts) and upon further investigation by our IT company, they have stated that the issue stems from Iinet servers. There are continuous issues with their SPF records.

Iinet/Westnet/TPG will be discontinuing their email services on 15 September 2024.
