Course Care
Recently I issued a written warning to a member for using three balls on the course when playing socially. In this instance, they continued to use three balls in the same round even after I reminded them that only two balls could be used. Respecting the course and our fellow members is something that I feel strongly about. I can assure members that should examples such as the above occur, that I will absolutely be addressing these with the member concerned.
If you haven't already done so - please take a look at the club's course care video. If you are new to golf and or the club and are unsure how to complete any of the course care tasks, please reach out to our Golf Operations Manager, Moka Edwards. Moka or I will only be too happy to show you what is expected.
On the issue of course care more generally, if you are inviting guests to play with you, then you are responsible for their conduct. This means that if they do not know how to repair their divot, pitch mark or rake a bunker or fail to do so - then it is your responsibility to note this and to do so on their behalf.
As a gentle reminder, when raking a bunker, you should exit it by walking backwards and pushing the sand away from you (back towards the middle of the bunker) and not pulling the sand towards you. It only takes a few extra seconds to rake a bunker well and leave a bunker how you would like it left for you.
Upcoming Events
Our Past Presidents and Captains Day competition will be held on Saturday 31 August PM. This is a great day to celebrate and acknowledge those who have put so much of their own time into our club. Following presentations we will announce the Most Valuable Player Awards for each of the pennant teams. All those to be presented with a MVP will be contacted shortly.
Our Junior Fundraising Day is back again this year on Friday 11 October. This is our main junior fundraiser for the year, so get your team of 4 together and get your entry in. It is always a fun day and rumour has it the DJ will be back on the 5th / 7th tee to create a party atmosphere. As always there will be plenty of food and refreshments and our juniors will be out in force on the day.
Our Mixed Foursomes Club Championships will be held on Sunday 13 October (PM Shotgun start). This event will be open to all playing members (except Introduction and Junior Introduction) with the timesheet open to all eligible members at the same time -6pm Sunday 15 September.
I am pleased to announce that through the work of Junior Coordinator Darren Roberts and Golf Operations Manager, Moka Edwards, we will be running our own World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) junior event in December. There is only one other junior event that accrues world ranking points in WA so this is quite an achievement. Importantly our event has been endorsed by both Golf WA and Golf Australia.
The event will be known as the IJG Gosnells Junior Invitational and will be played over 54 holes on Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th December. We have scheduled the event to minimise disruption to members.
The schedule is as follows:
Monday AM - no course play to allow course staff to prepare course
Monday PM - IJG Gosnells Junior Invitational
Tuesday AM - IJG Gosnells Junior Invitational
Tuesday PM - Two tee members competition
Wednesday AM - normal members Wednesday timesheet
Wednesday PM - IJG Gosnells Junior Invitational
As always, these events are great publicity for us and I know Darren has already been approached by numerous parents from other clubs around what we are doing at Gosnells. More information will be provided as we get closer to the tournament.
Course Renovation Week
A reminder that the course will be closed from Monday 9 September through to noon Friday 13 September for our annual course renovations. Greens will be cored and sanded, with fairways also cored. This is essential work that every course needs to do to keep the golf course in good shape.
The Clubhouse will be closed on Monday only. We are open for lunch (from Tuesday) during the course renovation period.
School Sport WA State Team
Congratulations to four of our juniors, Josiah Edwards, Mason Burr, Aileen Sirait and Halia Edwards who fly out last weekend for the School Sport Australia Interstate Golf Competition in Canberra. Both girls and boys team won bronze.
With a squad of 12 players, it is great to have Gosnells represented with 4 players.
Rules Corner
Rule 5.5B - Restriction on Practice Strokes After Completing Hole
After completing play of a hole, but before making a stroke to begin another hole, a player must not make a practice stroke.
However, the player may practise putting or chipping on or near:
- the putting green of the hole just completed;
- any practice green; and
- the teeing area of the next hole.
Of note, any practice strokes can not be made from a bunker and must not unreasonably delay play.
Until next time, bring on spring, I have had enough of winter!
