Captain's Update

Club Championships

This Saturday sees the conclusion of our Club Championships with 6 finals being played across all the divisions.

In our Men's Championship Match, we will have a first-time club champion in either Cian McGarvey or Ty Cleland. In our Women's Championship Match, it is a repeat of last year's final with Sasha Hofman looking to win her record 8th Club Championship victory in a row against Junior Club Champion Saehi Suh.

The above 36-hole finals tee off at 7am and 7:07am respectively, with the 18-hole finals for all nett divisions teeing off from 11am. Good luck to all 12 players contesting a final this Saturday. Presentations for the Saturday members competition and the Club Championships will occur at the end of all play on Saturday.

We have two teams in the weekday competition, Divisions 2 and 4.  I am pleased to announce that Ros McIver will be coming out of Pennant Manager retirement to manage our Women's Division 1 Team.  Ros will be supported by myself, Moka Edwards and Clay Godwin. Thank you Ros, I look forward to the many years of experience you will be passing onto the team.

Use of Mobile Phones on Course

A gentle reminder that whilst we use our mobile phones to score and look up rules etc, making or receiving phone calls particularly when playing in a competition should be avoided. Much like the issue of playing music that I discussed last month please be courteous to your playing partners and consider the impact on others from you taking a phone call.

Rules Corner

The rules can be confusing and it's okay if you don't know every rule. The purpose of this section is to draw attention to the rules and create awareness so we can all become more knowledgeable.

Please read the scenario titled "Jason's Brain Fade", which has been written by our Rules Guru Simon Podesta and can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. If you have a scenario you would like to raise, please let me know. Even better if it is a real-life scenario.

Chase the Ace

Congratulations to Lou Lombardi on winning our first Chase the Ace draw and the $2,000 jackpot prize!

A huge thanks to Vice Captain Clay Godwin for introducing and managing the very successful Chase the Ace drawing over the past year. The weekly running of Chase the Ace post Thursday's PM competition has been a great addition to a popular members golf day.

Chase the Ace yesterday followed the completion of 2 Johnson Taylor's sponsored shotgun competitions. The club thanks Johnson and Cuimara Contracting for the generous sponsorship.

Chase the Ace will have a week off next week but will be back on Thursday the 17th of April.

Jason's Brain Fade - Rules Corner

Jason teed off the 10th tee in the Monthly Mug stroke round.  He made a strong start having birdied two of the first 4 holes. On the 14th green, Jason's putt for bogey from just above and to the side of the hole lips out sharply and runs downhill away from the hole. Thinking it was Stableford and he had just wiped the hole, he scoops up his ball while it is still rolling.

As he had hit his putt quite firm, the ball was likely to have gone a further 3 metres or so before it would have stopped. What does Jason do now?

Jason's Ruling

As Jason has deliberately affected/stopped a ball in motion he incurs the general penalty (2 strokes). In this scenario the penalty would also apply to any other player that did the same thing to his ball or if he did the same to one of their balls, it's not just you and your own ball.

As Jason played from the green, he needs to cancel the stroke (i,e. it doesn't count in his score) and replay it from his original spot above the hole. If he does this then he only gets the 2 stroke penalty added to his final hole score.

However, if he simply put his ball back down on the ground then the first putt counts and he gets a second two stroke penalty making four penalty stroke in total. Members should note that the rules are different if the ball is played from anywhere else other than the green and some exceptions apply for Match Play too.

Rule 11.2 B outlines the penalty for a player deliberately deflect or stop and ball in motion.
Rule 11.2 C outlines where a deliberately deflected or stopped ball must be played from.
